Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium/CBJC will hold its 8^th Annual CBJC Jazz Festival from April 4^th to April 29^th 2007. The theme for this year's festival is "Jazz and Rhythm-Voice of the People," which speaks to the tempo of jazz music as it finds its sound in the contemporary voice of the people.

“Jazz musicians have always lived in Brooklyn , composed their music here, and performed for our residents, like ‘ Charlie Parker Place ’ in Bedford-Stuyvesant, which once boasted more than 20 jazz venues,” said Borough President Markowitz. “The Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s eighth annual jazz festival confirms that Brooklyn will remain a jazz capital in the days ahead — from legends like Randy Weston performing at the Brooklyn Historical Society to a peek at the young lions at the Youth Jamboree, Brooklyn will be boppin’!”

The Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium, born in 1999, is an amalgam of jazz musicians, venue owners, churches, community based organizations, and patrons of the music. Over the past 7 years, they have presented an annual spring festival, established a Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame, and produced yearly programs of events and activities that feature local jazz musical talents.

- Bishop Nat Townsley and The Gospel Jubilee â€“ sensational gospel group with his younger daughter Bonita and many more. Playing selections from their new CD Follow The Star.
- Charenee Wade â€“ Brooklyn bred talented young singer. She has recently appeared at Tonic Nightclub on the lower east side of Manhattan, a former student of NSP Youth, Inc.
- Miles Griffith - a singer who is in the spirit of the late Leon Thomas. Performing in Brooklyn before a groundbreaking tour of German jazz clubs.
- Andrew Lamb Trio - will be playing music from their recently released CB New Orleans Suite.
- Brooklyn Fashion Show & Sale - Models from Fashion Flyte will exhibit fashions by Brooklyn's designers. Designer Michi, Osun, Takiyah Jerome as well as other vendors will havethe creative artwork for sale.

This highly professional swing band, which actually started in the 50â€™s under the vision of Hank Dougherty, was acquired by Brooklynâ€™s famous jazz saxophonist and prolific arranger, Ray Abrams. Ray passed on in 1997, but the band continues to entertain lovers of swing and classic-jazz. The 18 members of the band consistently recreate the unforgettable love ballads-- that Donna sings wonderfully-- and the hard swinging, finger-snapping, toe-tapping instrumental tunes of the greatest swing-bands of the 40â€™s and 50â€™s, many of which feature the bandâ€™s soloist and Donnaâ€™s swinging vocal stylings.

The bandâ€™s library of musical arrangements is lengthy and well rounded, ranging from the still modern sounding charts created by Ray Abrams, to the swinging big-band charts from the minds of arrangers like Sam Nistico, Quincy Jones, Sy Oliver, Neal Hefti and so many others. This valued musical library supports the bands ability to create a well-rounded program of classic-jazz as played by the bands of Basie, Ellington, Herman, Hawkins, Eckstine and Hampton, etc.

The band's unique ability to perform to the spirit of the music and to swing at the drop of a hat is consistently nourished by the very dedicated skills of the bandâ€™s leader, Ervin Simpson, who has led the band since 1998. No doubt, this ability to swing the most beloved songs from The Classic American Jazz Songbook, explains why the band continues to maintain a growing presence in the tri-state area.

Of late, the Band has appeared at an increasing number of venues in the five boroughs and on Long Island.

Judy Bady, a native of Benton Harbor, MI, is a

vocalist, actress, writer and instructor who has won

multiple, consecutive DOWN BEAT® music awards and has

performed and/or recorded with Gary Bartz, Hamiet

Bluiett; Tom Burns; George Cables; Doug Carn; Andrew

Cyrille; Jon Faddis; Billy Harper; Billy Hart; Jon

Hendricks; John Hicks; Oliver Lake; Bill Lee; Barney

McCall; Bobby McFerrin; Rene McLean; Diane Moser;

Misha Piatigorsky; Badal Roy; Hilton Ruiz; Paul

Judy recorded and released her debut CD as a leader in

November 2003 entitled “Blackbird,” (which was

was also instrumental in arranging Judy’s tour in

Moscow, Russia in December 2003).  “Blackbird” has

Jazz! The Women's Viewpoint is an annual forum conceived seven years ago by the late Rosalind Blair, who was a member of the pioneering group Club Jest Us; a group of women promoters who were responsible for the vanguard recording at Night of the Cookers. Her desire was to set a safe place where women can share their views on the topic of Jazz, and their involvement on both artistic and personal levels. If Jazz is a cultural lifeline and culture expresses the civility of a people, women in the Jazz environment are the ones who can bring forth the truth. Therefore the position women must take is to speak on the facts that relate to them in this rich cultural expression!

Initially, the forum included a panel of 6 including musicians and wives of musicians concluding with a musical presentation. An honorarium was paid to all participants. Ms Blair funded the entire program herself. The presentation has evolved to be Intergen-
erational and the addition of more music. We ask that each panelist in addition to the discussion, present a small selection of her art.

Jazz! The Womenâ€™s View Point has had stellar roster of talented musicians and equally talented wives of musicians lend support to this forum over the years. This month's episode commemorates Black History Month with a look at some of the Brooklyn organizations that focus on the African American experience past and present. We’ll visit with the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporian Arts (MoCADA); hear about the legacy of jazz in Brooklyn with the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium; and visit Weeksville, Brooklyn’s first community established by people of color after the abolition of slavery in New York State.

Ray Barretto funeral arrangements

Band leader, percussionist, NEA Jazz Master & Grammy Award winner Ray Barretto will be viewed at the Riverside Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 from 11 - 5 p.m. and 6 - 10 p.m. located at 180 West 76th Street, New York. Barretto died at the Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, N.J. at 5 am on Friday, February 17th, 2006. Ray Barretto is survived by his wife Annette Rivera, his four children: Chris, Raun, Ray, & Kelly Barretto and four grandchildren: Jullian Barretto, Aja Peters, Arno Peters and Alex Peters. Information on funeral arrangements will be available tomorrow morning.

For nearly 40 years, conguero and band leader Ray Barretto was one of the leading forces in Latin jazz. His hard, compelling playing style has graced the recordings of saxophonists Gene Ammons, Lou Donaldson, Sonny Stitt, and guitarists Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell.

Born April 29, 1929 in Brooklyn, Barretto is one of the most prolific and influential Latin percussionists in the history of modern jazz. With a musical heritage as deeply rooted in the bebop jam sessions held in Harlem during the late-'40s as in his Puerto Rican ancestry, Barretto has spent over four decades refining the integration of Afro- Caribbean rhythms with the improvisational elements of jazz. Coincidentally, it was the tune "Manteca� recorded by Gillespie with Chano Pozo on percussion that drove Barretto to music. And it was a version of that same tune that became Barretto's first recording with Red Garland.

Few artists have been as successful over the years at fusing these two genres as Barretto, an undisputed master of this style. A pioneer of the salsa movement, Barretto achieved international super stardom and released nearly two dozen albums with the Fania label from the late-'60s until salsa's popularity peaked in the mid-1980's.

On October 29th 2005 at the Herbert Von king Arts and Cultural Center in Brooklyn, t he members of CBJC; musicians, vocalists, poets, churches, and community organization will walk attendees through a synopsis of the life style that was, is and will be jazz. Long recognized as America’s classical music, the genre is credited with over a century of existence and the Central Brooklyn Area has played a vital role in its success. , Scheduled from 1-5pm, "Jazz, Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow" is a free concert that will feature songstress Evelyn Blakey, first born of jazz legend Art Blakey, of the Jazz Messengers who was also a founder of the Hard-Bop era; Patsy Grant, Sandi O, Bob Cunningham, and Wayne Winston of NS Productions, A CBJC sponsored Youth ensemble,. There will also be a variety of other activities including a fashion presentation by Brooklyn designers, dance and comedy.

This event will showcase the jazz legends of our community as well as launch CBJC’s proposed “JAZZ HALL OF FAME!” Building Fund. Open to the public, the concert will showcase the various aspects of “jazz to the community”. We speak of “JAZZ” as “America’s indigenous music”, come out and partake of the heritage, wonders, and lifestyle and understand its true scope. Apart from traditional jazz vocalist and musicians there will be poetry, dance, art, fashion Comedy and even calypso acts. The CBJC’s has a directive to document the broader jazz lifestyle that came of age in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s
“Jazz has a tradition of community, many of the leaders of the civil rights movement were and are jazz enthusiasts, such as Martin Luther King Jesse Jackson and Adam Clayton Powell ” quotes Alma Carroll Widow of jazz singer Joe Carroll.
Since 1999, each year, starting with February, Black History month, CBJC has presented a remarkable program of live jazz performances, lectures and other events. CBJC programs pay homage to jazz greats, acknowledge the contribution of women artists, wives and family members, and acknowledge Brooklyn's jazz shrines, such as The Blue Coronet and Tony's Grand Dean. Founded by Jazzpazazz’s Alma Carroll, Viola Plummer of Sista's Place, the late Torrie McCartney, and Sam Pinn, 966 Jazz Program, CBJC is under the leadership of Jitu Weusi educator/cultural activist. Thought you would like to know that last evening's Special "Big Apple" Calypso Fund Raiser for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and Mississippi raised $8,500 and collected 5 Barrels of supplies.

Kudos to the Calypsonians Big "B", Black Stalin, Blackie, Bomber, Brown Boy, Dr. Witty, Duke, Funny, Gypsy, Johnny King, Poison Dart, Sexy Suzy, Short Shirt, Singing Sandra, Swallow and XPoser, Back-up Singers D'Revue Angels, The sunshine Band, Steelpan Virtuoso, Dave Gulson, M.C. De Wassy Man ......passin through, and M.C. Louis Antoine who all performed for free.

Special Kudos to BWIA for accommodating the travel needs of some of the performers..

Central Brooklyn Gulf State Relief Fund will be the conduit for getting the $8,500 to the victims.

1) Someone to organize and facilitate taking donations at the event. (4
people)

(2) Getting in contact with organizations that can assist the victims of
Katrina and finding out if they can come through and provide the folks with
information about resources and ways to help the victims of Katrina and not the U.S.
government. (2 people)

(3) Getting in touch with people that are doing similar events so that they
can come through and promote their stuff.

(3) Security for the event. We don't anticipate any drama but just to keep it
cool.

(4) House managing the space. We need a mic and a mixer as of now. There are
no chairs. Folks will have to sit on the floor or stand.

(5) A crew to maintain the mailing list at the event.

(6) Getting the Word Out

(7) Any finger food or beverage donations.

The New Orleans Musicians Clinic is determined to keep Louisiana Music Alive!
It is our beacon to soothe our souls. We want to relocate our New Orleans
musicians into the Lafayette/Acadiana community where they can remain a life
force! But most of them have lost everything... we must help them rebuild their
lives.

They can't access any of their NOMC accounts. They desperately need money to
fund these efforts.

Jazz Foundation of America:

We will be addressing the longer term needs of these jazz and blues artists
who will have just lost everything.

We will be raising funds and distributing money for the musicians to get a
new apartment or room for rent: by giving a first month's rent, possibly more,
for them to start over, a place to live. (This is what we normally do on a
daily basis for musicians across the country who become sick and can't pay their
rent, we also keep food on the table and get employment to hundreds of elderly
musicians through our Jazz in the Schools program. Our operations normally
assist 35 musicians a week.)

As well, we will be attempting to help New Orleans musicians by replacing the
thing that matters most and the only way they can ever work again: their
instruments.

To those who lost their instruments, like drummers and bassists who could not
carry their heavy equipment, and guitarist with their amps, we will be making
an effort to work with manufacturers and music stores to replace those
instruments for as many as we possibly can.

Remember, New Orleans was only "New Orleans" because of the musicians...

CBJC is an acronym for the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium. CBJC as an organization comprising several venues,muscians,community organizations and faith-based institutions committed to the development,nuturing and preservation of Jazz and related artforms throughout the Borough of Brooklyn. CBJC as organized in 1999 was the realization of years of discussions between representatives of United Music Makers,(Torrie McCartney), Sista's Place(Viola Plummer, SoFocus(Leroy Applin) and Jazzpazazz(Alma Carrol) on the importance and need for such a body. In pursuant of its mission CBJC subsequently produced its first festival in 2000, along with a Hall of Fame that honors those who have contributed to the history of Jazz in Brooklyn and Internationally
